Introvert Goes to Work: The Plot Twist I Didn’t See Coming

My life is not a movie, but I think the plot is cool enough, thanks to my internship story. If my time at Globe were to become a film, I just know I’d give it the title, “Beyond the Dashboard.” I came to Globe expecting to simply learn more about data, dashboards, and analytics, and I finished with so much more. And that’s how I can say I walked the right way.

For context, I would describe myself as someone naturally curious and observant about the many things I find interesting. But there’s a catch. I am also a bit introverted. I am not your typical social person, especially with people I just met. So coming to Globe as a Business Intelligence Intern, taking part in a professional environment and working with people of different backgrounds was new to me. It was unfamiliar, uncharted land I needed to navigate, but collaborating with supervisors, professionals, and fellow interns was something I eventually grew to become. Challenge is growth. And this experience proved it for me.

Over time, I became more comfortable with asking questions, sharing ideas, and working in and with a team. As someone who finds fun in figuring things out and learning through experience, collaboration and teamwork then became one of the most meaningful parts of my internship. Working with different people, adjusting to unfamiliar situations, and taking initiative became my everyday. Simply put, I became more confident as I stepped outside my comfort zone, and this helped me be better not only as a professional, but also as a person.

Finding my way

Looking back to the days, I still remember when I was unsure of the course I really wanted to take. My mom was among the people who encouraged me to consider Business Intelligence & Analytics (BIA) for the career opportunities in business and technology. Stuff happened, then I found myself as a BS BIA student at Mapúa. Stuff happened, then I found myself as an intern at Globe’s Business-to-Consumer (B2C) Territory Management & Synergies – Intelligence & Integration Unit.

Honestly, when I was looking for an internship, I applied to a lot of companies. I wanted to gain real experience in a professional environment and sent applications whenever I could. As if it were meant to be, however, I did not receive callbacks from the companies I applied to — so I was really surprised and excited when Globe did. Knowing Globe’s established reputation as a data-driven telecommunications company, I saw it as a great opportunity to learn in a large and fast-moving organization.

It was an opportunity I knew I had to seize, and I’m glad I did because the more I know about the industry, the more I appreciate the path I decided to take.

A part of that world

Seeing how data could be used not just for reports but to understand problems, identify trends, and support actual business decisions, I enjoyed the combined vigor of technical work and strategic thinking. As an intern, I have worked on a lot of dashboards, analytics projects, and different business cases. What started merely as a course I was encouraged to take became something I am genuinely interested in. I find it purposeful that the experiences I had in school became practical applications in the real business environment — and this confirmed that I am working in a field I see myself continuing in.

In school, we often work with prepared datasets and structured requirements, so when I experienced dealing with real data and analytics in a company, I saw how different and grounded it can truly be. I have been immersed in market and competitor analysis, lead generation, and projects that support actual business problems and needs. All these helped me understand the bigger picture behind data — that they are not just numbers and dashboards but quantified stories that help us make better decisions.

For instance, the most memorable project I have worked on, I can say, is the lead generation dashboard we have for barangays. This stood out to me because I witnessed how research and performance tracking helps identify and prioritize areas for expansion using different indicators. I found it interesting as it showed how raw data could be translated into actionable insights and practical plans for the teams working on the ground.

Likewise, monitoring Globe’s regional productivity and tracking the effectiveness of Internet services live were among my most remarkable projects. With our regional dashboard, I was able to analyze Globe’s performance across Batangas and Mindoro and compare this side-by-side with different areas according to market share, revenue, and growth. The live tracking, on the other hand, allowed me to use Microsoft Power BI to monitor outages and regularly update information across different platforms and regions nationwide. These are only three of the many projects I worked on throughout my internship, and they already give more than a glimpse of what it was to be on the real world’s data operations.

Every task, job order, and deliverable I managed revealed not only a different side of Business Intelligence but also a different side of me. One of my biggest realizations was that I was more capable of adapting and taking initiative than I thought.

As introverted as I can be at times, my experiences at Globe made me more assured in communicating, collaborating, and taking ownership of my work instead of always waiting for instructions.

Globe helped me discover that I could also take on leadership responsibilities. Becoming an intern team leader and helping my co-interns adjust to the team pushed me to become more patient, responsible, and comfortable in working under different circumstances.

Main character alert

Most, if not all, of our projects were a team effort, so my Globe journey is likewise a journey defined by the people I worked with. I’d like to thank Christian, our head intern leader, basically our unofficial mini-supervisor, for doing a great job of keeping us organized and guiding the team. I am also very thankful for Ms. Adjoline Gayamo, our Territory Trade Development Manager, whom I have worked closely with, and, of course, my immediate supervisor, Ms. Rochelle Buncab, the Territory Business Head.

Throughout our stay, they have always been kind, welcoming, and open to us. In our journey, they never made us feel alone and in no place to ask questions.

They had a lot of responsibilities themselves while we had a lot to learn. They were busy with their own work, but they always made us feel supported, comfortable, and checked up on. Lastly, my thanks are for Sir Niño Cabredo, the one who contacted me and gave me the opportunity to become an intern at Globe in the first place.

Reflecting on my Globe journey, I know I made the right choice because Globe was more than just an internship. It was a transformation. I had exposure not only to real-world data and projects. I had exposure to a better me — more confident, more adaptable, and more comfortable with working with a team in our team-centric field. With no doubt, my technical skills in analytics and dashboard development are now better. And more than this, I grew even more in my confidence, flexibility, and willingness and eagerness to try and learn.

The people I met along the way. The enduring challenges. The busy moments. Everything made our development feel supported, memorable, and taken care of. And if I’ll be asked, what I loved most about being a Ka-Globe was the teamwork and feeling that we could rely on each other no matter what, all while enjoying the experience.

Yes, my life is no movie, but it sure has its own way of writing its character arcs.

If "Beyond the Dashboard" is its title, then its message will be about gaining both technical skills and memorable experiences you cherish no matter where you go — about meeting new people and discovering new things that make you grow.

Globe showed me that work can be demanding while being enjoyable, challenging while being collaborative, and serious while being worth it. That is something I know and want every Ka-Globe and aspiring Ka-Globe to look forward to. That is a kind of future and work Globe taught me to look forward to. With Globe, I made the right choice. And if I had the chance to choose again, I’d choose Globe again because it helped me grow in ways I did not expect.
