Globe Cloud Internship POV: A Pivotal College Ganap

Updated: Jan 31

Meet André, an IT student leader with a heart for project management and Cloud technologies. He was a Cloud Process Engineering Intern at Globe Group in the last six months and says he enjoys different forms of management (except micromanagement 🤪). Read on as he shares his internship POV, from his nerve-wracking first day to discovering more about himself and his work as the months went on.

The Journey to Globe

In 2023, my search for an internship started. It often conflicted with the schedules of my exams and other school activities, so when Globe conducted a Career Talk in my school when I had some free time, I attended.

The seasoned professionals and Miss Nico Bambao’s talk about understanding my What’s and Why’s made me push through with my application for an internship at Globe. Surprisingly, even with the tight competition, I was given the opportunity to learn at Globe.

This is where it all began.

First Month Kickstarter

It would be a lie to say I was not pressured. I entered Globe thinking most of the employees were probably new to the industry, but I was in awe to know that most of them had been working for more than a decade. I guess they all appeared youthful! 😆

From then on, I realized that Globe is an environment full of people who have mastered what they do, and are willing to master what they must do.

Globe Outreach Program with AVP RJ Mendiola and team

I thought I was going to feel a lot of pressure; I did not foresee that, during the first month, I was bound to learn one of the most valuable lessons I carry to this day.

The Operations team with AVP RJ Mendiola led a Globe Outreach Program. We finished the event on a good note and decided to celebrate. Sir RJ decided to make libre of Starbs. While we were sitting down, he told me, “The journey in your job must also serve happiness to you, kasi kung hindi, mauubos ka.His statement made me question how my work/internship and life could come together in a way that makes my time worthwhile and fulfilling. I contemplated and realized that my life has always been associated with my unwavering passion for creativity. I decided to utilize it with my work and it gave me exactly the kickstart I needed.

Learnings for Career Development

Private Cloud and Google Cloud Team represent!

Being a Cloud Process Engineering Intern meant defining, simplifying, automating, and even eliminating processes and steps to make Cloud operations more efficient and seamless. To engineer the processes, not only must there be critical thinking and planning to tailor processes, but also sufficient knowledge about the cloud to effectively understand the possible steps.

Thankfully, I was assigned to teams in the cloud who fostered supportive environments. From Google Cloud learnings to the private cloud, everything contributed to my understanding of how resources, tools, and software are used in the workplace.

Furthermore, it was not just the cloud infrastructures and flavors that I enjoyed learning. I was also immersed in source control management, which focuses on both programming and technical skills. Since we provide primary support to the cloud teams, I was also able to hone my stakeholder management skills to help connect with the different clients and teams. This further built my relationship with different cloud professionals, because it was not just me supporting them; it was also them supporting me. As I provided support for their cloud operations and processes, they taught me so much about Cloud and leadership, considering they are indeed seasoned professionals.

Being Assigned to an Awesome Family

Our first award as a team!

Besides working in a very supportive environment, one of the best things I would always be grateful for was that I was assigned to a team that fostered great collaboration. Julian Patdu and Charles Santos, process engineers of the CEPE family, are the guys who I’d be forever grateful for because of their unmatched patience and efforts to teach me the basics of process engineering.

Created wonderful memories, experiences, and learnings.

We did not just learn, we have also built wonderful memories. Honestly, I think it was because of my Immediate Supervisors Allan Tan and Celso Tagle that I’ve tried 70% of the fancy restaurants in BGC, LOL.

My IS, Celso Tagle, has imparted so many lessons. I started as an intern, but he was training me to have the mindset of a good leader, teaching me management essentials and preventing miscommunication and setbacks. I learned business process management, stakeholder management, and simplification of process steps using Agile methodologies. Truly, it was a fruitful and memorable learning experience for over 6 months.

The POV

As a resource speaker for Campus Connect
As a resource speaker for Campus Connect

It’s fulfilling to say that 6 months ago, I was just an attendee of a Career Talk from Globe, and now, I am sharing my experiences and career development for Globe. It's something I will always thank Globe for entrusting me to do.

As I end my internship, I am happy to say that I have learned above and beyond in terms of readiness for the industry. Technical skills were honed, applied, and improved, while my soft skills and mindset toward leading were also refined to fit varying industries.

I was able to conclude that I needed to Practice humility amidst excellence, because no matter how good I was, there will always be people who are better and we should be willing to learn more.

I also Opined that the adventure is always greater than the hardships. There were times that I would come home exhausted, but happy. There was fulfillment and my energy was well-spent.

And lastly, I was able to Value every little learning, as it paved the way for the greater good. I came to understand that good leadership skills integrated with technical skills would be a powerhouse in the workforce. I was very thankful that I trusted the vision that the leaders in Globe paved for us, because it led me to be more prepared for the industry.

Muli, maraming salamat for everything, mga Ka-Globe!

Always, Andre Viernes
