My name is Andrew Al Aquiro, and I am excited to share my transformative internship experience with Globe Telecom, a journey that not only shaped my professional skills but also deepened my understanding of the telecommunications industry in the Philippines.
Joining Globe: A Dream Come True
As an Electronics Engineering student at Mapúa University, my passion for communication technology fueled my desire to intern at a leading telecom provider.

When I learned about Globe Telecom and its commitment to improving connectivity in the Philippines, my excitement grew. The company’s values of innovation and community engagement left a profound impression on me, compelling me to apply for the internship program.
At the Globe Fiberlab
Among the companies I looked up to, Globe Telecom stood out not only as one of the top telecom providers in the country, but also because of its strong emphasis on work-life balance. This inspired me to explore what it would be like to work in a corporate environment. When I learned about Globe’s internship program at the WCC office in BGC, Taguig offering a mix of desk and field work, I was motivated to set my sights on becoming part of the company.
Throughout my internship at Globe Telecom, I had the opportunity to learn from some of the most experienced professionals in the industry.
2024 Globe Gday with my fellow interns
On September 17, 2024, I attended Globe Day, an event that introduced me to the company culture and set the tone for my internship. The following day, my formal role began within the Network Innovation and Service Planning (NISP) team, where I specifically worked in the Technology Strategy and Innovation (TSI) section's Access unit.
The Day-to-Day Experience

Working in a hybrid setup—three days onsite and two days from home—my routines varied based on my projects. Mornings often began with a drive to Taguig and a walk to the office, where I connected with fellow employees over breakfast at the cafeteria. My days were filled with engaging discussions, emails, and meetings, often overseen by my mentors, Sir Patrick Jiorgen Hulipas and Ma’am Angeline Chang.

My responsibilities spanned multiple tasks, including project management for Proof of Concept (POC) initiatives, technical documentation, vendor coordination, and hands-on testing of IoT nodes. This diverse experience fostered my adaptability and honed my communication skills, essential traits in the corporate world.

Beyond project work, we were also enrolled in LinkedIn Learning courses for continuous learning towards our career path. We were required to submit an individual exit research project, contribute to unit-specific research tasks, and take part in company talks and events. These early responsibilities made the start of my internship challenging and enriching, pushing me to grow professionally and adapt quickly to the demands of the field.
Perhaps the most enlightening aspect of my internship was realizing the broader impact of our work at Globe Telecom. It was fulfilling to know that some of the work I did was aimed at bringing internet access to remote communities.

Projects and Learning Experiences

Throughout my internship, I was entrusted with crucial technical projects. Being involved in technical troubleshooting and project management tasks pushed me beyond my comfort zone, allowing me to grow and learn rapidly.

I enjoyed collaborating with other units, which allowed me to contribute as a cross-functional team member, conducting shallow testing, and maintaining seamless communication between internal stakeholders and vendors.
Reflecting on my time at Globe, I am grateful for the opportunities, challenges, and friendships I formed. This internship has not only equipped me with technical skills but has also solidified my commitment to making a difference in the telecommunications industry.

One memorable experience was working on the Equipment Tracking and Loan Management System for NTG. Designing a centralized tracking system not only improved my project management capabilities but also showcased my ability to innovate and contribute to the organization.
Mentorship That Shaped My Path

Throughout my internship at Globe Telecom, I had the opportunity to learn from some of the most experienced professionals in the industry. Ma’am Angeline Chang of the Access Unit and also my immediate supervisor, I was exposed to the full scope of project management, handling vendor coordination, leading progress reports, and even assisting with technical troubleshooting for the POCs I supported. Her guidance helped me understand how to navigate high-pressure, time-sensitive tasks while keeping projects moving forward.

I also worked closely with Sir Patrick Jiorgen Hulipas, who introduced me to the fundamentals of network planning. From territory-based solutions to drafting technical trial agreements and managing equipment inventory, he taught me how planning plays a critical role in building and maintaining reliable networks that serve the Filipino people across the country.
Interning at Globe exceeded my expectations by offering me a sense of purpose that I know will stick with me for years to come.

Sir Rogelio Singca, head of the Access Technology Unit, entrusted me with research assignments tied to real-world applications, pushing me to research innovative solutions and engage directly with potential vendor partners. His mentorship helped me appreciate the value of critical thinking and persistence when facing technical challenges.

Beyond the Access Unit, I had the opportunity to work closely with Sir Ryan Nato and Sir Mark Brian Suano from the Transport Unit. I was involved in major initiatives such as the 50GPON POC, iEnergy, and research efforts focused on renewable energy solutions, including the early-stage coordination with potential new vendor partners.

In Globe, you will not just experience theoretical concepts; you will witness them in action while contributing to a meaningful mission—improving lives through technology.
I also had the opportunity to collaborate with Ma’am Innah Antoinette Perez and Ma’am Carol Ong from the Digital Adoption Unit on the AR Remote Assist project, a notable use case of 5G technology. Under the guidance of Sir Rendall Gaw from the Transport Unit, we interns were engaged in meaningful initiatives such as the Q4: ShareDugo donation drive and the creation of infographics showcasing emerging technologies at Globe. Beyond work-related discussions, Sir Peter John Custodio shared valuable insights about life beyond the corporate world—a refreshing reminder of the importance of balance and perspective.

These diverse engagements not only broadened my technical knowledge but also deepened my appreciation for effective cross-functional collaboration in a dynamic corporate environment.
Each mentor shaped a part of my professional journey, equipping me with practical skills and values that I will carry into my future career.
Making a Difference

There’s often a misconception that working in a corporate setting is solely about profit, with little impact on society. However, my internship at Globe Telecom showed me otherwise. I learned that many areas in the Philippines still lack reliable internet access, and in some cases even electricity. Through my exposure to the network planning side of the field, I came to understand how much effort goes into addressing connectivity issues in both urban and remote areas.
From tackling challenges like power solutions, network congestion, dead spots, and slow internet speeds, to researching innovative solutions for extending connectivity to underserved regions, I realized how crucial our work is in bringing connectivity to the whole country.
Volunteer Work with Rise Against Hunger
Among the companies I looked up to, Globe Telecom stood out not only as one of the top telecom providers in the country, but also because of its strong emphasis on work-life balance.

It was fulfilling to know that some of the work I did was aimed at bringing internet access to remote communities. Internet connectivity is essential as it supports not just simple day-to-day communication but education, access to healthcare and a lot more that internet connectivity complements in our digital age.

Taking part in volunteer efforts like Rise Against Hunger allowed me to witness firsthand how Globe lives out its purpose of uplifting Filipino lives, not just through technology, but through meaningful community engagement.
Looking Ahead

As I transition from intern to graduate—having officially completed my degree on February 17, 2025—I feel equipped to take the next steps in my career.
